Nestled between the vibrant jungle and serene mangroves, Botánika is a haven for wildlife enthusiasts. The Osa Peninsula, where our resort is located, holds an astounding 2.5% of the world’s biodiversity, making it a prime destination for nature lovers. With such incredible diversity, every walk around the resort feels like a mini-safari. While there’s always something new to see, here are five of the most common wildlife encounters you can expect during your stay, along with a special shoutout! All of the stunning photos featured here have been taken right at our resort.
1. The Mischievous Monkeys
Whether it’s the resonant calls of the Mantled Howler Monkey (Alouatta palliata), the playful antics of the Central American Squirrel Monkey (Saimiri oerstedii), or the curious stares of the White-faced Capuchin (Cebus capucinus), monkeys are a regular sight at Botánika. These charismatic primates are often seen swinging through the trees or curiously observing our guests. Remember, while they’re fascinating to watch, it’s best to admire them from a distance—after all, they are wild animals!
2. The Charming Sloths
No trip to Costa Rica is complete without spotting a sloth! You might catch a glimpse of the Brown-throated Three-toed Sloth (Bradypus variegatus), slowly making its way through the canopy. Known for their leisurely pace and endearing expressions, sloths are the ultimate symbol of Costa Rican “pura vida.” Keep your eyes peeled; these masters of camouflage can be tricky to spot!
3. The Vibrant Scarlet Macaws
With their striking red, yellow, and blue plumage, the Scarlet Macaws (Ara macao) are impossible to miss. These majestic birds are often seen flying in pairs, their loud calls echoing through the treetops, adding a splash of color to your stay at the hotel.
4. The Playful Toucans
The Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), with its vibrant, multi-colored bill, is one of the most recognizable birds in Costa Rica. Often heard before they’re seen, these playful birds are frequently spotted around the resort, hopping from branch to branch.
5. The Dazzling Hummingbirds
Among the most enchanting sights at Botánika are the brilliant Hummingbirds. The Green-crowned Brilliant (Heliodoxa jacula) is one of the most commonly seen species in this area. With its iridescent green and blue feathers, this tiny bird flits from flower to flower, sipping nectar and displaying a dazzling array of colors. Their rapid wing beats create a soft humming sound, making it easy to spot them as they hover effortlessly in the air.
Special Shoutout: The Elusive Ocelot
While these five animals are the most commonly seen, we’d be remiss not to mention this incredible creature. Our night cameras recently captured an Ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), a rare and elusive wildcat that roams the jungle under the cover of darkness. These stunning cats are shy and prefer to stay hidden, adding a sense of mystery and wonder to the night.
At Botánika, every day brings a new opportunity to connect with nature and discover the incredible wildlife that calls this area home. So, pack your binoculars, bring your camera, and get ready for an unforgettable experience. And as you explore, please remember to respect the wildlife and their natural habitats—our shared environment thrives when we all do our part.
