At Botánika Osa Peninsula, we are incredibly proud to shine a spotlight on Brisa Hennessy, our local surfing prodigy who represented Costa Rica at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Brisa’s journey from the serene beaches of Matapalo to the prestigious Olympic stage is a story of passion, resilience, and extraordinary talent.
Early Years
Born on September 16, 1999, Brisa Hennessy spent her early years in Matapalo, on the Osa Peninsula. Her childhood home, nestled between the jungle and the ocean, lacked modern conveniences like windows, doors, or electricity, which fostered a deep connection with nature. Her parents, who ran a surf school, were pivotal in cultivating her love for the waves.
At the age of nine, Brisa and her family moved to Hawaii, where her passion for surfing continued to flourish. Inspired by her uncle, a professional surfer, Brisa’s talent quickly emerged. In 2018, she made history as the first Costa Rican to qualify for the World Surf League (WSL) Championship Tour. Brisa has faced significant personal challenges, including an eating disorder and hypothyroidism, yet her resilience and openness about these struggles have made her a beacon of inspiration for many.
Brisa’s Olympic Journey
Brisa’s achievements are remarkable. In 2019, she finished third at the WSL Corona Bali Protected event, earning her spot in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, where she made her debut. At the Paris 2024 Olympics, Brisa’s exceptional skills and determination were on full display. Her score of 15.56 in the qualifying heat was among the highest, propelling her through the rounds and bringing hope for an Olympic medal.
In the semifinals, Brisa delivered a stellar performance but narrowly missed a podium finish, securing fourth place. Despite not medaling, her journey and achievements have elevated her to the status of a national hero and a source of inspiration for aspiring surfers worldwide.
